We’re pleased to welcome Dancing Saved My Life to the Praxis community!
Dancing Saved My Life (DSML) is a grassroots initiative founded by Zumba instructor Andreina Febres from the Bay Area and her student, Joy Glasier, who was undergoing cancer treatment in 2014. DSML’s mission is to provide a nurturing environment where individuals can build resilience, seek comfort and discover renewed hope on their cancer journey towards healing and wholeness.
Inspired by Andreina’s experience of losing her mother to cancer and Joy’s personal battle with the disease, they sought to support the cancer community. During this time, Joy was also attending a stress relief class tailored to cancer care, led by Maura Singer Williams, which became a crucial part of her healing journey.
As Joy explains, “If I was able to dance, I knew I was doing OK. Through stress relief practices and meditation, I learned how to lessen the fear and anxiety.” Combining the expertise of Maura and Andreina, they established a sustainable program designed to benefit individuals affected by cancer.
“Our vision is to create a supportive community where individuals can feel connected, understood, and empowered. We aim to inspire participants to face challenges with courage, dignity, and a renewed sense of vitality, enabling them to embrace life’s opportunities fully,” says Andreina.
DSML offers several types of gatherings. DSML’s Renewal retreats help women with a cancer diagnosis reduce stress, connect with their bodies and nature, and claim their own healing in a supportive community of peers. These retreats are hosted in the beauty and tranquility of Commonweal Retreat Center.
